It's time for Quarto's yearly flash fiction competition, Thunderdome! The rules are as follows: a one-minute video that features a Columbia professor giving a flash fiction prompt will be released at midnight on each of the next five days. You will have exactly 24 hours to write a piece of 300 words or less, which you will submit to firstname.lastname@example.org with the title, "Enter the Thunderdome: Day X." For each day, a winner will be announced; then, at the end of the week, we'll announce the overall winner.
Quarto and the Columbia Journal are hosting a panel with Columbia MFA (Master of Fine Arts) Students on Friday, April 6th 4:30 - 6 PM in Dodge 413! The panelists come from a range of professional backgrounds with a variety of artistic interests - each field of Columbia's MFA, Writing, Film, and Visual Arts will be represented.
This coming Friday (03/18), Quarto will be collaborating with the Columbia Journal, the literary magazine of Columbia's Graduate Writing Program, to help facilitate their Incarcerated Writers Initiative. Participants will read submissions from incarcerated writers and compose letters of response, offering suggestions for how they can improve their work and, most importantly, offering words of inspiration and encouragement. If you are interested in joining this effort, please fill out this form and come by Dodge 413 at any time between 4pm and 8pm. You are not required to stay for the event. We look forward to seeing you there!
4x4, the Columbia Review, and Quarto will be hosting a joint open mic reading this Thursday (2/8) at 8:30PM in 501 Dodge. Please come and share your stories, poems, essays, and whatever else you like! Refreshments will be provided.
This Friday (10/20), please join Quarto for our second open-mic reading of the semester. Snacks will be provided, but readings will not, so please bring any work that you'd like to read! At this reading, we'll also be collecting donations for hurricane relief in Puerto Rico. Specifically, these funds will be donated to The Hispanic Federation, a nonprofit organization which works to support Hispanic families through advocacy programs and community assistance programs. For more information on this organization: https://hispanicfederation.org/
Come collect copies and celebrate the launch of Quarto's annual fall chapbook in 501 Dodge Hall. Our winner and two runners-up will be reading excerpts from their pieces. It's a perfect study break to eat some snacks and listen to some amazing writing. We are so excited to see you!
