Re-Present the Other: A Roundtable Discussion about Diversity in the Publishing Industry

Lenfest Center of the Arts, KOB Screening Room

Doors open at 5:30PM for Columbia University students and at 5:45PM for the general public

Tickets are not required to attend.

In this roundtable discussion, writers, editors, and agents of diverse backgrounds will discuss best practices for navigating the publishing industry. They’ll talk about the aesthetic, qualitative, and ethical considerations involved in writing and publishing work by and about traditionally marginalized identities, challenging tokenization, the current publishing landscape, best practices when negotiating compensation, handling feedback that “washes” the work to make it more salable to a “broader” audience, publication paths, missteps, accepting setback and rejection, building an audience, and more. This roundtable seeks to inform students of diverse backgrounds about the literary industry awaiting them.

Incarcerated Writers Initiative Letter-Writing Event

This Monday, March 11th, 6:15-9 PM in Dodge 413, we are asking all students in the Writing Program—first-year and second-year, Journal staff and members of the wider Columbia University community—to help us read submissions from incarcerated writers and compose letters of response, offering suggestions for how they can improve their work and, most important, offering words of inspiration and encouragement. The time commitment for you will be small, the benefit to the writers unimaginably large. Even writing one letter will make a difference.

Thunderdome: Quarto's Annual Flash Fiction Contest

It's time for Quarto's yearly flash fiction competition, Thunderdome! The rules are as follows: a one-minute video that features a Columbia professor giving a flash fiction prompt will be released at midnight on each of the next five days. You will have exactly 24 hours to write a piece of 300 words or less, which you will submit to columbiaquarto@gmail.com with the title, "Enter the Thunderdome: Day X." For each day, a winner will be announced; then, at the end of the week, we'll announce the overall winner.

Incarcerated Writers Initiative Letter-Writing Event

This coming Friday (03/18), Quarto will be collaborating with the Columbia Journal, the literary magazine of Columbia's Graduate Writing Program, to help facilitate their Incarcerated Writers Initiative. Participants will read submissions from incarcerated writers and compose letters of response, offering suggestions for how they can improve their work and, most importantly, offering words of inspiration and encouragement. If you are interested in joining this effort, please fill out this form and come by Dodge 413 at any time between 4pm and 8pm. You are not required to stay for the event. We look forward to seeing you there!

Quarto Reading: Hurricane Relief

This Friday (10/20), please join Quarto for our second open-mic reading of the semester. Snacks will be provided, but readings will not, so please bring any work that you'd like to read! At this reading, we'll also be collecting donations for hurricane relief in Puerto Rico. Specifically, these funds will be donated to The Hispanic Federation, a nonprofit organization which works to support Hispanic families through advocacy programs and community assistance programs.
