Why did you join Quarto? What do you hope it accomplishes this year?
I used to write a lot, but I stopped awhile back to focus more on my academic studies in film and my career (hopefully) in graphic design. But I still consider writing a wonderful form of personal and artistic expression, so I joined Quarto as a way to make my design skills useful in helping prospective writers get the efforts of their creative labor out in the world. I really hope that Quarto can continue to showcase writers' work, inspire people, and be an integral part of the artistic community here at Columbia.
What is the last book you read that wasn't for a class?
This sounds bad, but I don't read that many books ....... as a film student I tend more toward screenplays (especially since it's Oscars season). The last script I read was either The Big Short or Beasts of No Nation, both of which I loved as films. If we're talking actual books ... it was probably A Delicate Truth by John Le Carré like sometime in November?? #yikes
If you could recommend one book to anyone, which would it be and why?
The Elegant Universe by Brian Greene. It's basically a layman's introduction to quantum physics and, despite the subject matter, it's a fascinating and easy read. It makes me appreciate how big and mysterious the universe is and how small and inconsequential we are in comparison. I think everyone could use that kind of perspective every once in awhile.
If you could live in any book or literary world, which would it be and why?
Ian Fleming's James Bond. I think I'd make a great spy. Also all I've ever wanted in life was to drag-race a Lamborghini through the Swiss Alps while wearing a stylish tuxedo, is that HONESTLY too much to ask.
